Self-Directed Support (SDS) gives individuals the right to choose how their social care is delivered. We’re here to ensure that people in Dumfries and Galloway can access this support confidently, fully understand their options, and feel empowered throughout the entire process.
Self-Directed Support (SDS) gives you choices about how your social care is arranged and delivered.
There are four options, and you can choose the one that suits you best — or even a mix.
Option 1 – Direct Payment
- You get the money to arrange and pay for your own support.
- You choose what support you want.
- You buy the support yourself — like hiring a personal assistant or choosing a service.
- You keep control of your budget.
You are responsible for keeping records and managing the money (we can help with this)
Option 2 – Individual Service Fund
- You choose your support, but someone else manages the money.
- A service provider or organisation holds the money for you.
- You tell them how to spend it on your support.
- You stay in control of your choices — but not the admin.
Good if you want choice without the paperwork
Option 3 – Arranged by the Council
- The council arranges and pays for your support.
- Social Work organises services for you.
- They choose the provider based on your assessed needs.
- You receive the support, but you don’t manage the details.
Best if you prefer not to deal with managing support or money.
Option 4 – A Mix of the Above
- The council arranges and pays for your support.
- Social Work organises services for you.
- They choose the provider based on your assessed needs.
- You receive the support, but you don’t manage the details.
