What is Peer Support?

Peer support is built on shared understanding, collaboration, and collective experience. Peer support groups provide a safe and welcoming space where people can talk openly about their experiences, feelings, and knowledge with others who genuinely understand.

Peers are individuals who share similar lived experiences. Because of this shared background, they are able to offer empathy, understanding, and meaningful support..

Peer support groups create a purposeful environment where collective knowledge and lived experience are valued. Through mutual support and shared learning, participants can build greater awareness, understanding, and confidence.

The connections formed within these groups often develop into supportive relationships and a sense of community, offering both emotional encouragement and practical help.

Peer support is built on four key principles:

  • Shared lived experience, which helps build trust, empathy, and genuine understanding.

  • Equal, mutual relationships, where people support each other rather than trying to solve or “fix” problems for one another.

  • Encouragement rooted in hope and belief, helping individuals recognise their strengths and potential.

  • A purposeful and supportive environment, where people can explore their choices and options together.
